Energy Trading and Risk Management is a five-day senior commercial course delivered by Mars Training Centre in the world's energy trading hubs — London, Geneva, Dubai, New York, and Amsterdam — designed for senior managers who run or oversee energy trading, hedging, and market-risk functions.

Energy markets in the 2020s are more volatile, more interconnected, and more politically exposed than at any point in the modern era. A single policy decision, a pipeline incident, or a sudden cold snap can move prices ten per cent in a session. For producers, refiners, utilities, traders, and large industrial consumers, the discipline of trading and hedging has moved from a niche function to a board-level concern — and the cost of getting it wrong is measured in years, not quarters.

This programme equips senior leaders with a structured commercial command of energy trading, hedging, and risk management. You will work through the principal markets — crude, products, natural gas, LNG, power, and carbon — examining how prices are formed, how positions are taken, and how the risks are governed. The focus is on senior oversight: the questions the board, the CFO, and the chief commercial officer should be asking of a trading book.

What You Will Learn

  • Describe the principal energy markets and their pricing references.
  • Analyse the role of physical and financial trading in an integrated business.
  • Apply hedging logic to producer, refiner, and consumer exposures.
  • Evaluate the principal derivative instruments used in energy markets.
  • Diagnose the principal sources of market, credit, and operational risk.
  • Interpret a trading book and the metrics that govern it.
  • Apply a governance framework for energy trading and risk management.
  • Assess the impact of the energy transition on traded markets.
  • Communicate trading and hedging strategy clearly to boards and regulators.
  • Lead a senior trading and risk management function with discipline.

How You Will Benefit

You will leave with the structured senior-level command to oversee an energy trading function, ask the right questions of the trading floor, and improve the governance of market risk in your business — and a Mars Certificate of Completion.

Your organisation will gain a senior manager who can stress-test trading and hedging decisions, sharpen risk governance, and reduce the probability of the catastrophic loss events that periodically reshape energy companies.
